This material from the Haines papers at the American Heritage Center contains US Air Force Office of Special Investigations reports from November 1949. They cover a special inquiry into unconventional aircraft. An Eastern Air Lines captain was interviewed in Atlanta on 6 October 1949. He described a wingless, cigar-shaped object with two rows of lighted windows and a red flame, seen at 0340 on 23 July 1948 southwest of Montgomery, Alabama. A follow-up report closed the inquiry.

SYNOPSIS I was interviewed and stated that he sighted an unidentified flying object 30 to 50 miles southwest of Montgomery, Alabama at approximately 0340, 23 July 1948, at an estimated altitude of 5000 feet. This object was flying northeast to southwest at an estimated speed of at least 500 miles per hour. Reported this to Eastern Air Lines Publicity Control Officials on 23 July 1948.
