This is Volume 2 of the Ministry of Defence report 'Unidentified Aerial Phenomena in the UK Air Defence Region', Defence Intelligence Staff Scientific and Technical Memorandum 55/2/00, dated February 2000 and received 7 December 2000. It gathers 25 working papers on natural and man-made phenomena, meant as a reference for analysing UAP reports. The papers cover ball lightning, radar detection, balloons, satellites, mirages, plasma and similar subjects. One paper compares magnetic field experiments on human volunteers with close encounter reports. It concludes that effects from such fields are 'uncannily similar' to what witnesses describe.

VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL AND OTHER NATURAL ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENA

1. This paper briefly investigates a number of additional atmospheric visual phenomena, mainly meteorological, which can give rise to UAP reports because they are unfamiliar to most witnesses:

-	Lenticular clouds	visually mistaken and, with a little embellishment be turned into convincing UFOs'.
-	Dust Devils	Key factors in the filtering process must be:
-	Moon and Sun
'Dogs'	- They are usually visible using reflected light (e.g. ambient daylight/sunlight or moonlight), but on some occasions they may be seen in silhouette as disc shapes.
-	Aurora	-
-	Twisters	-
-	Ice Clouds	- Lenticular clouds have no inherent glow (other than natural external illumination).
-	Glory/Corona	-
-	Condensation Trails and Distrails	- They will either appear to be stationary (dependent on geometry) or move slowly (at wind rate).
-	Halos	-
-	Mother of Pearl Clouds	- They will not manoeuvre.
-	Mamma	- Conditions to climb are rare unless 'forced ascent' (i.e. external agency) conditions are present.
-	Noctilucent clouds	-
 4. Lenticular clouds often form:

## LENTICULAR CLOUDS

2. Examples of laminated, disc-like (Lenticularis) clouds are shown at Figures 1 to 9. These are clouds which are oval or lens-shaped. No further explanation is required to see that these can easily be visually mistaken - and, with a little embellishment - be turned into convincing 'UFOs'. Key factors in the filtering process must be:
