This Central Intelligence Agency release, dated 2002-04-08, reproduces an intelligence information report about UFO sightings on the South Korean east coast and north of the Korean Demilitarized Zone. It says the ROK Air Force Chief of Staff briefed security unit commanders in Seoul on 10 and 11 February 1970. Since early 1970, radar stations in Kangwon-do had tracked large balloon-shaped objects, assumed to be dirigibles, that entered ROK airspace and exploded. The Chief of Staff speculated they might be used to drop agents, propaganda or germs.

1. (C-NOPORN) This report concerns reported sightings of UFOs on the ROK east coast and north of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (IMZ). 2. (U) Because of the sensitivity of Source, the information in this report is not releasable to foreign nationals. 1. (C-NOPORN) On 10 and 11 February 1970 a meeting of all commanding officers (CO) of ROK Air Force (ROKAF) Security Units (SU) throughout the ROK was held at ROKAF Headquarters in SHOUL, ROK. At that meeting the ROKAF Chief of Staff gave those in attendance a highly-classified briefing concerning recent sightings of UFOs in KANGWON-do, ROK. 2. (C-NOPORN) Since the beginning of 1970 ROKAF radar stations along the eastern coast of the ROK in KANGWON-do have been sighting (detecting) maneuvers of large balloon-shaped objects at high altitudes just north of the extreme Eastern Sector of the Korean IMZ. On several occasions these UFOs, which the ROKAF officials are assuming to be dirigibles because of their shape and speed, have penetrated ROK air space, traveled in southeasterly direction over KANGWON-do. 1.
