Flying Saucers UFO Reports

Central Intelligence Agency · 2001-03-12 · 68 pages · text by GLM-OCR

This CIA release, approved in 2001, contains Flying Saucers UFO Reports No. 1, a magazine that Dell Publishing issued in 1967. It argues that UFOs deserve serious study. It gathers reported landings, radar trackings, sightings by astronomers and pilots, and cases involving creatures, drawing on Ruppelt, Keyhoe, Fuller, NICAP and APRO. It also describes Project Blue Book, NICAP, APRO and the new University of Colorado study under Dr. Edward Condon.

## Who Are All These Others?

For more than 20 years a segment of thought on this planet has been given to the proposal that "We are not alone." There has been physical evidence in the shape of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) that there are extraterrestrial craft, controlled by intelligence, perhaps even manned by humanoids, reconnoitering our Earth, exploring our geological makeup, examining our military bases and probing our overall design, much as we have begun to probe the surface of the Moon. The early history of these sightings, dating back to Kenneth Arnold's 1947 experience that gave the UFOs their name, Flying Saucers, has been pock-marked with charges of "pure lunacy." This magazine is designed to acquaint you with those cases which, by virtue of the evidence,

the reliability of the sighters and the body of supporting scientific data, tend to establish that such aerial phenomena do exist and should be given serious attention and investigation as well as intelligent treatment by the press.

There is the other side of the coin, the apparent fantasies that have sprung from the exciting but emotionally disturbing prospect that we do, indeed, have "visitors"; the fiction writers who have selected these phenomena as a basis for imaginative accounts; the jokesters and publicity seekers who have perpetrated outright hoaxes. It is all here; the sense and nonsense, the speculation and the theories, compiled to prepare you in the event that today's UFOs will be tomorrow's next-door-neighbors.
