WASHINGTON - "Flying saucer" enthusiasts, who think it is up to Congress to find out whether earthbound mortals are being watched from outer space, as some scientists say, are due for a rebuff at the hands of the new chairman of the House "space" committee, California's George P. Miller.

"The Air Force is the expert on that subject," Miller told NANA. "But if the civilian groups think it is trying to silence inquiry, let them bring us the evidence, and we'll consider it."

This refers to a running fraud between several civilian groups interested in Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO), about which several books and much other literature has been written, and the Air Force.

They say that every time an official investigation gets under way the Air Force uses its influence to squeech it.

Earlier this year the House science and astronautics committee, more commonly called the space committee, then chairmaned by the late Overton Brooks of Louisiana, was on the verge of starting an inquiry. Brooks named a subcommittee on unidentified flying objects headed by Rep. Joseph E. Karth of Minnesota.

Karth made preparations to hold public hearings. Spokesmen for such organizations as the Unidentified Flying Objects Research Center (UFORC) and the National Investigation Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) made prep

arations to move in with evidence.

But at the mention of public hearings, full Committee Chairman Brooks said "no."

"Well, if the hearings are not to be public, there's no use holding hearings at all." objected Karth. And that ended the matter. The explanation given by Brooks was "the press will make fun of us. Anyhow, our committee has much more serious business on hand."

But the UFO fans are not taking a "no." They announce they will be back when Congress reconvenes, to press for a hearing.

Speaking is Adm. R. H. Hillenkoetter, who headed the Central Intelligence Agency form 1947 to 1950. He says:

Could it be that some of these flying objects are in reality a kind of secret weapon which the Air Force wants to hide from, a potential enemy? "If so." retorts

a former admiral, who was in a position to know about such things. "they are the best kept secrets in our history."

"These UFO seem to be under intelligent control. They have had plenty of time to be hostile and they have not shown any hostility. If they had displayed hostility to this country they might be the invention of some other nation.

The public has a right to know the facts. Congress is the body to investigate."

The man who thinks it "absolutely certain" that we are being watched from outer space is Albert W. Chop, former Air Force official, whose job was to evaluate UFO data.

And Dr. Clyde W. Tombaugh the map who discovered the planet Pluto, reports:

"These things, which do appear to be directed, are unlike any phenomena I have ever observed. Other stars in our galaxy may have hundreds of thousands of habitable worlds swirling about them. Races on these worlds may have been able to utilize the tremendous amounts of power required to bridge the space between the stars."

Rear Admiral D. S. Fahrney. Ret., asserts that "reliable reports indicate that there are objects coming into our atmosphere at very high speeds. The way they change position indicates that their motion is directed."

Rep. John W. McCormack of Massachusetts, the House majority leader and its speaker pro tem in the absence of ailing Speaker Sam Rayburn, and who is also the godfather of the House space committee which he got started on its way. Is one of those who favors congressional hearings.

"I feel the Air Force is not giving out all the information it has on UFOs." he insists.

"These UFOs must be in a very high state of perfection and development," he added. "Whether they come from some other planet, we don't know. We can't say they do until we find life on another planet. But so many expert witnesses have seen them, that you can't disregard so many unimpeachable sources."
