This Central Intelligence Agency conference report, dated October 1995, contains the proceedings of a conference on ethnic conflict held 30 September to 1 October 1993. The CIA's Geographic Resources Division sponsored it. Academic geographers, anthropologists and US Government officials presented papers on ethnic and territorial conflict in Eastern Europe, Western Europe, the former Soviet Union, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and South Asia. They also discussed what these conflicts mean for US policy. The document contains no UFO material.

The conference was sponsored by the Central Intelligence Agency's Geographic Resources Division.' It featured academic geographers and anthropologists who are specialists in ethnic issues and US Government offi- cials with practical experience in dealing with the consequences of ethnic conflict. This report contains the papers that the participants presented as well as the key points of the discussions that followed. Where appropriate, the authors have updated their papers to reflect events since the conference. The views herein are those of the individual participants and not necessarily those of their affiliated organizations, the Central Intelligence Agency, or any other US Government agency.
