This is a Central Intelligence Agency cable dated 14 August 1985 and sent to Washington. It forwards news clippings and magazine articles on Josef Mengele, released under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act. The attachments include an Argentine magazine report on claims that Mengele lived in La Banda, Santiago del Estero, as Adolfo Gualterio Ascher, along with an interview with the judge investigating those claims. They also include a newspaper article on Mengele's protection in Paraguay and on past efforts to extradite him. The file has no UFO content.

But every inquiry, official or other- wise, on • the fugitive's whereabouts yields a flat official denial that he is living in Paraguay. A reporter from Argentina who vis- ited Paraguay last month related: "I went for an appointment with a gov- ernment information official and be- fore I could even open my mouth to ask a question, he said, 'Mengele's not in Paraguay and we don't know where he his.' " In June, Miguel Angel Bestard, a Ministry of Interior official, told an- other 'journalist, "I deny categorically that Mengele is in Paraguay. It's abso- lutely false and a slander against this country." Public interest in Mengele was rea- wakened not long ago when Wiesen- thal disclosed that he had asked U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim to try to persuade Paraguay to honor a f longstanding request for Mengele's extradition to West Germany to stand•* trial. Paraguayan authorities replied through' Waldheim • that Mengele, known as the "angel of death" for his genocidal activities at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland during World War II, no longer lived in that country. They said Mengele had not lived there since 1960. Tuesday, in an attempt to prove the point, Paraguayan Attorney Genera/ Clotildo Jimenez asked the nation's supreme court to annul Mengele's citi- zenship papers on the grounds that he had forfeited his, rights by being out- side the country for more than two years. On Wednesday, the court com- plied and annulled his citizenship. But Israeli sources here have shrug- ged off Paraguay's assertion that Men- gele no longer lives there as "the usual answer."
