This is a Central Intelligence Agency cable dated 14 August 1985 and sent to Washington. It forwards news clippings and magazine articles on Josef Mengele, released under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act. The attachments include an Argentine magazine report on claims that Mengele lived in La Banda, Santiago del Estero, as Adolfo Gualterio Ascher, along with an interview with the judge investigating those claims. They also include a newspaper article on Mengele's protection in Paraguay and on past efforts to extradite him. The file has no UFO content.

Alejandro von Eckstein, a Paraguayan in his 70's, with a European accent, who, diplo- mats say, was given an "honorary" officer's com- mission by General Stroess. oar and is often seen in the presidential antechambers. The Israelis, who have an em- bassy in Asuncien, and a suf- flciently equivocal relation- ship with Paraguay to try to sell the army mobile desalini- zation equipment, think that Mengele is dead or gone; the, Americans are of the same view. The best Indication of Dr. Mengele's departure is a story, told by a foreigner, of how three Paraguayan colo- nels reacted when Klaus Barbie, the Gestapo chief of Lyons, was extradited by Bo- livia to France in 1983 — in exchange, it has been said, for shipping French weapons to the Bolivian police. "Maybe we could pass von Eckstein off as Mengele," one of the colonels is sup- posed to have said, "What do you think he is worth — $200,000?" Paraguay reacts with oper- atic outrage when Mengele's name is mentioned. Last month, the official party news- paper, La Patrla, produced an editorial, printed on specially tinted yellow paper, denounc• ing what It called "Mengele- Wiezhentat and Co„ Inc." The argument, complete with Its derogatory misspelling of Simon WiesenthaPs name, was that the redoubtable Nazi
