This is a Central Intelligence Agency cable dated 14 August 1985 and sent to Washington. It forwards news clippings and magazine articles on Josef Mengele, released under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act. The attachments include an Argentine magazine report on claims that Mengele lived in La Banda, Santiago del Estero, as Adolfo Gualterio Ascher, along with an interview with the judge investigating those claims. They also include a newspaper article on Mengele's protection in Paraguay and on past efforts to extradite him. The file has no UFO content.

however, have been repeatedly thwarted
since Mengele has lived mostly in the corn- -
pany of other former Nazis in Latin Amer-
ica who are joined in a Mutual protection

financed-by drug smuggling and extortion.
Argentina and Paraguay proved safe ha-
vens for Mengele until 1960, when he just
managed to elude a stina staged in Buenos
Aires by agents of Mossad, Israel's intelli-
gence arm. (On that foray they captured the
Gestapo's Adolf Eichrnann instead.) For the
next decade, Mengele shuttled between
Paraguayan cities, from which he made fre-
quent journeys to Italy, Spain, Greece and
Egypt, meeting with his wife in Rome and
Milan. As he moved around the globe, Men-
gele left a bloody trail.
In 1961 a pursuer named Nora Eldoc, act-
ing on her own, reportedly made contact
with Mengele at a resort in Paraguay, and
a series of meetings followed. A beautiful,
48-year-old Jew, Eldoc had been sterilized
by Mengele two decades earlier at Ausch-
witz. Before she could spring her trap on
him, however, Mengele discovered her true
identity and fled. liar body turned up
months later in Brazil. In 1965 ex-Nazi Her-

car trunk in Uruguay after he bargained to

The most startling account of Mengele's
travels has come from leading members of
Paraguay's opposition party, who say that

Armed with fresh evidence of past atroc-
ities, West Germany issued a new arrest
warrant for the doctor last January, and to-
day he has a $100,000 bounty on his head.
"Mengele lives like a hunted animal," says
Isser Harel, ex-chief of Israel's Mossad.
"This itself is some kind of revenge." 4
