This Central Intelligence Agency file, from the OBOPUS BGFIEND operations volume and released under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act, contains a secret dispatch dated 14 December 1953. It forwards a copy of a letter to a Mr. Yarborough, who is being held in Egypt over customs charges. The letter asks about rumors of a Communist campaign against him and damage to his Long Island estate. It suggests that his wife and son leave Egypt and asks for details of his negotiations over roughly 10,000 L.E. in duties. It does not discuss UFOs.

In view of the above, and indeed Whether the above is true or not, we wonder whether you have given consideration to your wife and son preceding you to the United States or at least leaving Egypt now for some place in Europe. In addition to increasing their security, this would definitely establish Whether or not the Egyptians are simply holding you on the publicly stated financial Charges which, when settled, will make it possible for All of you to leave or whether there is more behind your detention than the Egyptian Government has so far admitted. If your family is permitted to leave without you and with sufficient funds for their immediate needs it might indicate that determination of your 0$180 will not be much longer delayed. We think that you should give serious consideration to this proposal. We would also like to be brought up to date on the details of the negotiations between yourself and your lawyers and the Fiscal Parquet. Have you to date received any statement of the Charges - against you or of the specific amounts which you are supposed to owe the Egyptian Government? We are aware, of course, of the claim of approximately 10,000 L.E. for 011001181 duties but we have seen nothing else in the press. We would like to know the exact amount of the customs: levy and whether or not this is the only claim being made against yod' for back customs duties.
