This is Volume II, Part 1 of the CIA History Staff's Official History of the Bay of Pigs Operation, a Top Secret history dated October 1979 and approved for release in July 2011. It looks at how the Agency took part in shaping US foreign policy toward Guatemala and Nicaragua during the anti-Castro program. It covers dealings with President Ydigoras Fuentes and Roberto Alejos, training sites such as Retalhuleu, cover stories, and negotiations with the Somoza brothers for an air base and port. It contains no UFO material.

"concluded his remarks by saying that the cancellation blow would be so severe that the administration's plans for the Western Hemisphere, which have received so much publicity, would probably lose all meaning." 85/ During the period immediately prior to the in- vas ion, but after the bulk of the Cuban forces and the operational aircraft from JMADD had departed Guat- emala, President Ydigoras requested that he receive daily situation reports in case he had to respond to either internal or foreign crises which might result because of GOG support for the Brigade. In the con- fusion attendant upon the operation, the system could not be maintained; and on 19 April 1961, following attacks on the GOG in the United Nations and by the opposition Congressmen in Guatemala, Ydigoras informed ____Ithat he had been forced to agree to permit a visit to Retalhuleu and to the La Suiza site by opposition Congressmen. JMADD was ordered to sterilize the base in the same manner as had been done three months earlier when the newsmen had been escorted through the area.
