This Joint Committee Print, dated December 8, 1982, gathers studies that the Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Intelligence prepared for the Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress. It gives estimates of Soviet gross national product for 1950 to 1980, with indexes of industrial production, agricultural production and consumption, and explains the methods and data behind them. The foreword says official Soviet statistics inflate growth and that the CIA measures offer a more accurate picture. The document contains no UFO material.

Sources to this table: The rates for other industry and total industry are derived as an
1. State wage bill. This was derived from table D-9, column 3,
except the total wage bill and military personnel, which are from
table D-8, column 1.
2. Social insurance rate. The social insurance rates are from CIA,
GNP I970, p. 72, except for the total, total industry, fuels, other
industry, other branches of material production, and military
personnel. The rates for the total, fuels, and other branches of
material production are derived as column 3, divided by column 1.

3. Social insurance deductions. Total social insurance deductions
are derived in CIA, GNP I970, p. 46. Deductions in the fuels sector
are derived above in the sources for table D-9. All other sectors,
except for other branches of material production, are determined as
the product of column 1 and column 2. The value for other
branches of material production is determined as a residual.
