This Joint Committee Print, dated December 8, 1982, gathers studies that the Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Intelligence prepared for the Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress. It gives estimates of Soviet gross national product for 1950 to 1980, with indexes of industrial production, agricultural production and consumption, and explains the methods and data behind them. The foreword says official Soviet statistics inflate growth and that the CIA measures offer a more accurate picture. The document contains no UFO material.

1. Unadjusted social insurance. This is derived from table D-12
except for the values for the total and for agriculture. The
agriculture entry is derived as the agriculture value in table D-12
plus: (1) collective farm payments into the All-Union Social Insur-
ance Fund for Collective Farmers (0.356 billion rubles—CIA, GNP
I970, p. 46); (2) collective farm payments into the All-Union Social
Security Fund for Collective Farmers (0.780 billion rubles—Ibid);
and (3) social insurance charges paid on wages of hired agricultural
workers (0.018 billion rubles——Ibid, p. 66). The value for the total
entry is the sum of the entries in column l. The line item data from
table D-12 are assigned to the same GNP categories as were the
wage data in table D-8.
2-6. Adjustments to social insurance deductions. The adjustments
made to the social insurance deductions are analogous to the
adjustments made to the wage bill in table D-8.
7. Adjusted social insurance. This was derived as the sum of
columns 1 through 6.
