This Joint Committee Print, dated December 8, 1982, gathers studies that the Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Intelligence prepared for the Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress. It gives estimates of Soviet gross national product for 1950 to 1980, with indexes of industrial production, agricultural production and consumption, and explains the methods and data behind them. The foreword says official Soviet statistics inflate growth and that the CIA measures offer a more accurate picture. The document contains no UFO material.

The food index is derived in JEC, Consumption. Columns 2 and 4: The values for 1950, 1955, 1960, 1966, 1970, 1974, and 1976 are derived by dividing columns 3 and 5, respectively, by column 1. Intervening years are interpolated by assuming equal percentage rates of change.The values for 1977-80 are assumed to decrease at an annual rate of 0.25 percentage points for income in kind (column 2), and 0.1 percentage points for collective-farm-market sales (column 4). 103 Approved for Release: 2019/07/19 C05210421 Columns 3 and 5: The values for 1950, 1955, 1960, 1966, 1970, 1974, and 1976 are from tables B-11 and B-12. The values for all other years are derived as column 1 times columns 2 and 4, respectively. Column 6: This is column 1 less columns 3 and 5. Columns 7 and 8: The base-year (1970) ruble values of consumption of soft goods and durables are multiplied by our indexes of consumption of soft goods and durables as derived in J EC, Consumption. The 1970 values are from table 9. Column 9: This is the sum of columns 6, 7, and 8. Column 10: This is the index of column 9.
