The CIA's Directorate of Intelligence issued this Weekly Summary, No. 0369/70, on 8 May 1970. It covers events through noon on 7 May. The Far East section deals with the allied operations into Cambodia, Hanoi's cautious response and the government in exile Sihanouk formed in Peking. Other items cover Soviet military aid, the Sino-Soviet talks, Jordan, Dahomey, Guatemala and Brazil, and a special report looks at Cuban support for subversion in Latin America. Many pages are withheld, and the summary contains no UFO material.

(bX1 b) (3) Approved for Release: 2023/03/28 C03154550 RENEWED VIOLENCE LIKELY IN GUATEMALA Guatemalan President Mendez has allowed the state of siege, imposed following the assassina- tion of German Ambassador von Spreti, to lapse despite an in- crease in terrorist violence. Mendez‘ action suggests that his government will not undertake large—scale counterterrorist ac- tions in the remaining weeks of his administration. an extreme right—wing group similar to the Army Special Com- mando Unit, which operated against leftist subversives in 1967 and l968, had been activate probably with President-elect Arana's tacit approval. \ Since the commando unit's appearance, sev- eral Communists have been killed The FAR has decided to con- tinue its terrorist activities both in Guatemala City and in rural areas. On 29 April, left- ist terrorists in Guatemala City d, tried to kill one of Arana's body- guards; a policeman was killed in (bX3) President Mendez has been reluctant to deal strongly with the leftist threat because of his desire to conclude his term of office on l July peacefully. He also apparently wants to place the burden of solving the ter— E rorist problem on the incoming Arana administration. His atti- tude probably will give the right- ist counterterrorists even more reason to act.
