This Central Intelligence Agency file, dated 29 September 1975, collects Office of Security memoranda written while the Senate Select Committee was investigating the Agency. Staff were told to alert former employees about possible committee contact over Project MERRIMAC/RESISTANCE, and the file answers committee questions about Hayes International and Bay of Pigs pilots. It also records staff interviews about CIA name checks at NSA and a Justice Department request for records on domestic electronic surveillance. It contains no material on UFOs.

. we 1 4. Mr. Hughes was also interested in determining a firmnumerical figure for the number of times the Office of Securityhas reviewed tax records, and after an explanation of the difficulties in applying a statistical figure to these checks,Mr. Hughes agreed that the figure would fluctuate depending onhow one counted each case where tax records had been reviewed.Mr. Hughes asked if there were any additional instances wherethe Office of Security had reviewed Internal Revenue Servicetax records and was advised that one recently discovered caseis not contained within the 17 June 1975 letter to the U.S.Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Hughes was advised that thisparticular case is extremely sensitive and that any release ofinformation concerning this case would have to be obtained fromthe Director of Central Intelligence. Mr. Hughes then asked ifthis sensitive case was of a counterintelligence nature and ifit occurred within the time frame of those cases previouslyreported. The undersigned replied in the affirmative to bothquestions, and Mr. Hughes stated that he required no further information concerning this case. 5. Mr. Hughes took notes during the above interview butdid not evidence an interest in the names of the individualsinvolved in each case. Mr. Hughes’ notes primarily consistedof a breakdown of each case as to the dates it occurred; the type of tax information obtained; and the category into whicheach case would fall. Further, Mr. Hughes stated that for hispurposes the identities of the individuals would not be neces- sary, adding that his primary interest was in determining the circumstances and manner in which the Office of Security hadobtained tax information. Mr. Hughes asked how the Office of Security might currently undertake to obtain tax information onan individual and was advised that should such an event occur,it would be handled in full compliance with all existing regula- tions. 6. Mr. Hughes did not request that the Office of Securityfurnish him with any documents concerning the review of tax records and seemed satisfied with the information provided verbally.
