This Central Intelligence Agency conference report, numbered RTT 95-10039 and dated October 1995, presents the proceedings of a conference held 30 September to 1 October 1993. The CIA's Geographic Resources Division sponsored the conference. In it, academic geographers, anthropologists and US Government officials examined ethnic conflict by region, covering Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and South Asia. The primary source of infonnation on all aspects of
the geography of the Middle East is the TubingerAtlas
des Vorderen Orients (Wiesbaden, 1968-1993). The
several hundred sheets of this serial publication and its
many supplementary monographs include a wealth of
information on most of the linguistic and religious
groups in the region. V
The coverage of the Middle East in Atlas Narodov
Mira (Moscow, 1964) was remarkably explicit at that
time and is still useful as a source of information on
the location of linguistically defined groups.
The Middle East Journal and Asian Bulletin are good
sources for infonnation on recent events.
A convenient list of useful literature on the human and
physical geography of the region appears in the
section devoted to Southwest Asia and North Africa
in A Geographical Bibliography for American
Libraries (Washington, DC: Association of American
Geographers, 1985).
The London-based Minority Rights Group has issued
several reports on Middle Eastern topics. No one vol-
ume deals adequately with ethnicity and nationality in
the Middle East. However, Carleton Coon’s Caravan:
The Story of the Middle East (New York, 1951) is still
useful and stimulating in spite of its early postcolonial
date.
