This Central Intelligence Agency translation, dated 4 September 1990, reproduces a TASS report by correspondent V. Belousov that appeared in the Soviet newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda. It says that on the night of 2 September a large illuminated ball appeared over Murmansk while residents were watching the Vremya program, moving slowly from the sea toward the Kola Peninsula. The Air Defense Staff told the reporter that the object resembled a large airship flying at an altitude of 25 km and that Air Defense soldiers were keeping it under observation.
