This undated CIA letter answers a request from Colonel Gerald E. Jorgensen, Chief of the Air Force Office of Information's Community Relations Division, to declassify the "Report of the Scientific Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects." It states that the Office of Scientific Intelligence found the original report could not be declassified. Instead, an unclassified version leaving out the names of personnel and organizations had been prepared. The CIA asked that the Agency's sponsorship of the panel not be publicized further and that participants not be listed in unclassified releases.

Attention: SAEOIC Deav Colonel Jorgensen: Consideration has been given to your request of 27 July 1955 for the declassification of the "Report of the Scientific Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects." The Office of Scientific Intelligence feels that the report, so originally drafted, cannot be demerged. As an alter-native, an unclassified version has been prepared which omits names of personnel and participating organisations, and as are applicable to the release of this version. It should be noted that permission for release has not been obtained from persons or organizations involved in the original panel report, and that the panel members themselves agreed only to the release of the edited summary and conclusion indicated by Mr. P. G. Sorensen in his 29 December 1557 memorandum to ASCII. We are most anxious that further publicity not be given to the information that the panel was sponsored by the Central Intelligenced Agency. Further, we cannot authorize the listing of personnel participating in the discussions in any unclassified releases.
