This NICAP case file compilation (Dan Wilson) collects material on the July 1948 Chiles-Whitted sighting near Montgomery, Alabama. It includes a NICAP note naming Eastern Air Lines Captain Clarence S. Chiles a special adviser, an exhibit list, and Air Force Office of Special Investigations reports dated November 1949. In those reports Chiles describes a lighted, cigar-shaped object with a red exhaust flame traveling at least 500 miles per hour. Atlanta Journal article extracts are also included.

After passing abreast of airliner carrying observer, object tended to disappear upwards to the rear and disappeared into overcast. A cherry red flame extended 50 to 75 feet to rear of object. The forward two-thirds of cylindrical unidentified flying object appeared to have two well defiared rows of cabin lights. Appeared to be result of jet power. Excellent - well coordinated gentle climbing turn into clouds prior to disappearance At least 500 miles per hour. Disappeared into cloud bank to rear of observer, after slight clinking turn. RELATIVE TO THE OBSERVER (At 5000) Visibility - Excellent, with 25 mile range. High - broken clouds - brilliant moonlight - faint trace of light breese. Captain C. S.
