This Black Vault compilation contains a September 1997 reply from the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense to John Greenewald's FOIA request, enclosing its UFO records. The enclosures include a Navy information sheet dismissing the Philadelphia Experiment and an Air Force UFO fact sheet listing 12,618 Project Blue Book sightings, 701 of them unidentified. They also include the National Academy of Sciences review endorsing the University of Colorado report and the concluding pages of a 1994 Air Force Roswell report attributing the wreckage to Project MOGUL.

Beyond that, the U.S. Air Force no longer investigates reports of UFO sightings. This was not alwavs the case. On December 17, 1969, the - Secretary of the Air Force announced the termination of Project Blue Book, the Air Force program for UFO investigation started in 1947. The decision to discontinue UFO investigations, the USAF s aic, was based on: (1) an evaluation of a report (often called t~e Condon Report) prepared by the University of Colorado and entitled "Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects;" (2) a review of the University of Colorado report by the National Acace~y of Sciences: (3) past UFO studies; and (4) Air Force exper~ence investigating VFO reports for two decades • • 3
