on Deee~~e~ 17, 1969 the Seereta~y of the Air Force announced the
termi nation of Project Blue Book.
Th~ decision to discontinue UFO investigations was based on an
evaluation of a report prepared by the Unive~sity of Colorado entitled,
"Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects;" a review or the Univer-
sity of Colorado's report by the National Academy of Sciences; past
UFO studies; and Air Force experienc~ investigating UFO reports for
two decades.

As a re:sult of these investigations an~ stu·!ie:s, and exJ)e~ience
gained from investigating UFO reports since ,948, the conclusions or
Project Blue Book were: {1) no UFO reported, investigated, and evalu-
ated by the Air Foree has ever given any indication of threat to our
national security; (2) there has been no evidence submitted to or dis-
cov,red by the Air Foree that sightings categorized •s ~unidentified"
represent technological developments or principles beyond the range
of present day scientific knowledge; and (3) there has been no evidence
indicating that sightings categorized as "unidentified" are extrater-
restrial vehicles.
With the termination of Project Blue Book, the Air Foree regulation
establishing and controlling the program for 1nvest1gattng and analyzing
UFOs was rescinded. All documentation regarding the former Blue Book
1nvestigati~n was permanently transferred to the Modern Military Branch,
National Archtves and Records Service, 8th and Pennsylvania Avenue,
Wa$h1ngton, D.C. 20408, and is available for public review and analysis • ..
In ,977. President Cart~r asked the National Aeronautics and Space
Administ~ation (NASA) to look into the possibility or resumins UFO investi-
ga~ions After studying all the facts available, they decided that
nothi~~ ~oul~ be gained by further investigation. The Air Force agrees
w! t~ ~.t!3t dec:!.sior.. 1 r, however, firm evidence is round justifying
r~~the~ investigation. an appropriate agency will be directed to under-
take the effor<;.
Th~re are a numbe~ of universities and professional scientific
organizations ~uch as the American Association for the Advancement of
Sci ence, whieh have consider~d UFO phenomena during periodic meetings
anc s~~inars. In addition, a list or private organizations inte~ested
in aerial phe~~~ena ~4Y be round in Cale's Encyclopedia of Associations
(Editio~ 9, Vol I, pp. U32-3). Such timely review of the situation
