The Air Force began investigating UFOs in 1948 under
a program called Project Sign. the pegram's name
. was changed to Project Grudge, and In t 953 It became
known u Pro;ect Blue Book. On Dec. 17, 1969, the
secretary of the Atr Force announced the tennination
of Project Blue Book.

Batween 1948 and 1969 the Air Force investigated
12.618 reported UFO sightings. Of these, 11,817 were
found to have been caused by material obiects IUCh
as balloons. satellites. and aircraft: immaterial objects
such as lightning, reUectiona, and other natural
phenomena: astronomical objects such as stars, planets,
the sun, and the moon: weather conditions; .and houes.
Only 701 reported sightings remain unexplained.
