NASA via ibiblio · 1969-07-31 · 251 pages · text by OCR
This is Volume 1 of NASA's Apollo 11 Technical Crew Debriefing, dated July 31, 1969. The Mission Operations Branch of the Flight Crew Support Division at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston prepared it, and it was originally classified Confidential. In it Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins go phase by phase through suiting, launch, powered flight, Earth orbit and lunar surface activities. They comment on suit fit, vibration, checklists, lunar dust, footing and poor sleeping conditions in the lunar module. A section titled Visual Sightings appears in the table of contents.

COLLINS (CONT'D) tell. All of a sudden, this thing changed character from a static to a dynamic situation, and that was what I woul call the instant of lift-off.
ARMSTRONG Concerning the noise/vibration intensity at lift-off, it was my impression that the combination was rather severe until approximately the time of "Tower clear," at which time there was a significant decrease.
COLLINS Yes, but would you say noise? I would say vibrations. I thought the noise level was much less than I had expected. The vibration was more.
ALDRIN How about a rumbling? That is physically felt as much as heard.
COLLINS You don't hear it in your ears. You feel it in your whole body. Whether that's noise or whether that's vibration, I don't know.
ARMSTRONG I would agree that the noise was low level.
COLLINS In terms of interference with communications, though, I think you would also have to say that it is low level.
ARMSTRONG That's true.
