This FAA daily record of facility operation (Form 7230-4) comes from the Anchorage Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZAN) and is dated 11-17-86. It was released through The Black Vault. Most entries cover routine operations, including SIGMETs, radar outages and NOTAMs for the Mt. Pavlof eruption. The log also records that JL1628, a 747 bound for Anchorage, reported traffic at FL350 with white and yellow strobes that appeared to pace it. Controllers had intermittent radar contact but identified no known traffic, and the Washington ROC was briefed.

ROC, ZAN-1 adzd. 0036 Oceanic Flow set 10 mins between departures all routes from ANC 000023 AS on watch. 0100 PAVLOF NOTAM altitude raised to FL270. 0110 S drift of Pavlof ash added to FDC NOTAM. 0112 ANC Oceanic Flow cancelled. 0141 FDC 91.91B NOTAM sent for Mt. Mageik. 0201 KING17, C130 OG EDF no incident. Gear problems. 0221 JL1628, HB747, BIKF - ANC reported traffic at his altitude (FL350) one mile with a white and yellow strobe. AAL ROC & EDF ROCC notified. No known traffic identified. 0233 JL1628's traffic apparently pacing visually. ZAN and ROCC have intermittent non radar contact with the unknown target. Notified ANC Customs. 0254 JL1628 has lost visual contact of the unknown target. 0257 EDF ROCC lost radar contact with unknown at a 7 o'clock position of JL1628. 0323 JL1628 OG ANC parking at INTL terminal. 0350 SIGMET Golf 4 distributed.
