This Project Blue Book case file, digitized by the Internet Archive, covers Incident 144: two Eastern Airlines pilots reported that a wingless, cigar-shaped object with a flaming exhaust passed their DC-3 about 20 miles southwest of Montgomery, Alabama, on 24 July 1948. The file includes an OSI interview with a Robins Air Force Base employee who saw a similar object, negative aircraft traffic reports from many bases, and later correspondence. A December 1948 intelligence report found fairly consistent descriptions across four related sightings.

Headquarters Wright Field Dayton, Ohio Att: Col. McCovy-M.C.T.A. Dear Colonel McCoy: I am writing to you at the request of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker regarding a request made by a Mr. A. C. Loadding, who stated that he represented your office. Mr. Loedding came to my office this noon in civilian clothes, showed me some travel orders, and an identification card, and requested information from me as to the occurrence over Alabama on Saturday morning, July 24th, where two of our pilots saw an aerial phenomenon on their flight path. Mr. Loedding requested some information from us about the pilots and the event itself, together with a statement of policy from this company. Before doing anything in connection therewith, Captain Rickenbacker has suggested that I write to you for confirmation of this request and whether I should give it to Mr. Loedding or send it directly to you. I would very much appreciate your advising me on this matter not later than Monday, by calling me collect, if you will, at Circa 6-3300.
